So, here’s nerdy thing about me #522. I am fascinated with music that most people probably completely ignore. And I’m not talking about those one-hit wonder songs or even unexpected B-side jams. I’m talking about…TV themes. Yes, TV themes!

Do you remember when every TV show had a theme song? I miss those days. Ya know, back in the 1900s! For many of you reading this, you might have treated the TV theme song as your last window of opportunity to grab a snack from the kitchen before your favorite show started. But I was glued to the TV. Because to me, those theme songs were just as entertaining as the shows that followed them.

Fast-forward to 2020 and I now have a TV themes playlist in my Apple Music library. Do you know how hard it was to build a decent playlist when most of the songs are only 30 seconds long? But it’s one of my favorite playlists because it’s unique, fun, and nostalgic. From the dozens of mostly 80s era TV themes on my playlist, I’ve compiled my Top 10 F.O.A.T (favorite of all-time) list. These are presented in no particular order, and I’ve included hyperlinks to the songs so you can reminisce for a few minutes—like literally, five minutes. LOL.

Enjoy! And I welcome you to share your favorite TV theme song in the comments!

Good Times

Catch me on the right day and I might just break out and sing the entire Good Times theme complete with my very own high note ad-lib right after the “Ain’t we lucky we got ‘em” line!

Three’s Company

It’s funky. It’s groovy. It’s the Three’s Company theme! I liked this song so much, I would even listen to the instrumental version that played when the show was over!

Preachers of L.A.

This song is too hype! If I owned an NBA team, this song would be the entrance music for the star player.

In Living Color

Not only did In Living Color introduce us to Jaime Foxx, Jim Carrey, and J. Lo, but it also gave us a theme song with Heavy D spittin’ bars! I still jam to this one.

Perfect Strangers

I know, I know. The show was cheesy. But, the theme song is so inspirational. Just listen to them lyrics! For real!

Living Single

If I could have walked into Tower Records back in the day and bought the Living Single single (see what I did there?), I would have been there on release day!

A Different World

Be honest—were you disappointed when you finally realized that Hillman wasn’t an actual college? I know I was. At least we’ll always have this soulful theme song from the Queen of Soul herself.

Jem and the Holograms

Hey, don’t judge me for including a cartoon theme song on my FOAT list. If a song is hot, it’s hot! And this song is hot. It’s more than hot—it’s truly outrageous!

Amen

If I even think of this theme song, I break out my imaginary tambourine and play like I’m sitting in the front row of revival service at my childhood A.M.E. church. It’s just uplifting!

Miami Vice

If I ever get the opportunity to drive a Ferrari Testarossa, I promise on everything I’ll have this song playing on repeat…at full volume.
